MDU Resources Names Stumpf Vice President of Strategic Planning

MDU Resources Group, Inc. (NYSE:MDU) announced today the appointment of John Stumpf, 47, to the position of vice president – strategic planning for the corporation. Stumpf has been serving as vice president – corporate development for Knife River Corporation, an MDU Resources subsidiary, since 2002.

“John will do an outstanding job in this position for MDU Resources,” said Terry D. Hildestad, president and chief executive officer of the corporation. “He has significant experience in business development and in the strategic planning process. We are pleased to have him in this position as we continue to grow the corporation by strategic acquisition and through focused organic growth.”

As vice president of strategic planning, Stumpf will identify strategic initiatives, perform acquisition review, conduct economic and financial research and assist the president and chief executive officer as well as business unit presidents in developing business strategies.

Stumpf is a Mandan, N.D., native, with a bachelor’s degree in business administration from the University of North Dakota in Grand Forks. He is a certified public accountant and a veteran of the U.S. Navy. Stumpf worked in public accountancy before joining MDU Resources as a financial auditor in 1992. In 1993, he joined Knife River as a financial analyst and held positions of increasing responsibility at that business unit, including serving as vice president of administration at Hap Taylor and Sons, a Knife River subsidiary in Oregon, from 1998 to 2000. He returned to Knife River’s corporate office as director of special projects and then advanced to his present position. Stumpf and his wife, Linda, live in Bismarck and have two daughters.
