Knife River Corporation’s roots run deep in the mining industry. It was founded in 1917 as a coal mining company near the Knife River Indian Village in west central North Dakota. During the company’s long history of mining and reclamation, it has been known as a company that goes beyond what’s required in protecting and respecting the environment.
Knife River Corporation prides itself on its ability to transform depleted aggregate source sites into useable and environmentally sound properties. The company works closely with government agencies and landowners to return mined land to a viable and productive site. For example, land that may not have been useful before mining can be transformed into post-mining productive farmland, made into wetlands or other wildlife habitat, or developed into commercial and residential property.
Restoring rock quarries and gravel pits is an important part of responsibly managing aggregate reserves, a scarce and valuable resource. Although it's just one part of the process in efficiently and productively using this resource, reclamation speaks for itself as the final and most lasting effect of aggregate mining.
