Knife River - Western Oregon Division has taken a proactive approach in the restoration of gravel-mined areas in the Willamette River floodplain to create off-channel habitat for fish and wildlife.  Partnering with the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife and Oregon State University, Knife River initiated a project to connect several gravel extraction ponds to the main channel of the Willamette River.

The project resulted in the creation of off-channel pools that promote native fish production by providing rearing habitat for trout and salmon species.  The project won the MDU Resources Environmental Integrity Award in 2002 and the 2001 Oregon Plan Award from the Oregon Department of Geology and Mineral Industries.
