Baldwin Contracting Company, a Knife River Corporation company, has transformed the landscape of a historic gold mining district and is teaching students of all ages the importance of the construction materials industry. Through aggregate extraction and processing activities, dredge trailings that were once abandoned in the Yuba Goldfields are now being used to provide a source of aggregate-based construction materials to nearby communities.
The post-mining reclamation process has resulted in an ecosystem with aquatic, riparian and grassland habitat that supports a variety of native plant and animal species. During educational tours and field trips, participants are able to observe these plants and animals firsthand in their native environments. As aggregate extraction continues to advance into adjacent areas, new habitat is created through ongoing reclamation. Hallwood Habitat demonstrates how a formerly abandoned mine site can be restored to wildlife habitat and how active mining operations can co-exist with sensitive environments. The Hallwood Habitat won the MDU Resources Environmental Integrity Award in 2001.
