Knife River — Central Oregon Division has been a valued partner for a stream restoration project on Tumalo Creek near Bend, Ore. The Tumalo Creek restoration project is a multi-phase project with a goal of restoring hydrologic stability, riparian vegetation and fisheries habitat on and adjacent to 2.8 miles of stream that was damaged by wildfire. Knife River’s contributions to the project include the donation of whole trees from land development projects in and around Central Oregon, equipment to load log trucks and the skidding and decking of trees for engineered log jams. The log jams are one of the most critical elements to the project as they serve to increase bank stability and restore natural step-pools that provide valuable spawning and rearing habitat for fish. Knife River donated 110 trees for Phase I and more than 400 trees for Phase II. The project won MDU Resources’ Environmental Integrity Award in 2006.
