Working with consulting soil scientists from Bozeman, Mont., Fidelity Exploration & Production Company developed a program of managed irrigation that allows water produced through coalbed natural gas production to be used for growth of forage crops for landowners in the area of Fidelity E&P's production.
The program creates a beneficial use for the byproduct water associated with coalbed natural gas production. Extensive monitoring of soil chemical and physical properties is conducted before, during and after irrigation to ensure that the management program is working as designed. This is a cutting edge application of soil science for protection of agriculture in the area of coalbed natural gas operations. This program won MDU Resources' Environmental Integrity Award in 2004.
